My Natural Hair Frequently Asked Questions

natural hair frequently asked questions

I get questions all the time from people I know and even strangers about my natural hair.  I'm always eager and willing to answer any questions I receive because I love talking all things natural hair.  I compiled a list of ten questions that I receive most often about my hair.  If you have any other questions that aren't on this list, leave them in the comments and I'll be sure to answer.

1.)  How long have you been natural?

I received my last relaxer back on September 6, 2000.  I transitioned for about 2 years and have been natural ever since.  I went natural wayyyyy before it was even a thing!

2.)  What made you decide to go natural?

I went natural initially to give my hair a break from relaxers.  My hair was breaking off from getting relaxers too frequently.  My mom suggested I take a break from relaxing to let my hair regain its strength and prevent further breakage.  As it started to grow out into its awkward transition phase, she convinced me to continue to grow it out and wear it natural even though I, nor she, had a clue what to do with it once it was natural.

3.)  What products do you use?

I don't consider myself to be a product junkie.  However, I have been attempting to try more products lately.  Currently, I am using Shea Moisture's Red Palm Oil Collection and I really like it.  I also really love Mielle Organics products.

4.)  How often do you wash your hair?

I typically wash my hair every week, but sometimes I'll stretch it out to every other week if I don't have time or don't feel like washing.  I also try to switch between shampooing and co-washing.  If I shampoo one week, the next I'll co-wash.

5.)  How did you get your hair like that (aka How did you style your hair?)

90% of the time my hair is in a twist out.  That's my go-to style.  Though, last summer I decided to do wash and go's the whole summer.

6.)  How do you maintain your hair at night?

To preserve my twist outs, I re-twist my hair in big twists without product.  If my hair is starting to dry out, I'll use a moisturizer to re-twist.  For my wash and go's, I usually pineapple my hair or split my hair into two sections separating the front and back and put into two loose ponytails.

7.)  Do you ever straighten your hair?

Yes.  I typically straighten my hair once a year.

8.)  Is that your real hair?

I always chuckle when people ask me this.  Like, how you just gone be that bold to ask me that!? lol  But yes, this is all my hair.  I've never worn a sew-in or a wig or tracks etc.  The only time I don't wear my real hair is when I have braids.

9.)  You have a lot of hair.  How do you manage it?

Dealing with my hair can be overwhelming at times with the washing, conditioning, styling, etc.  But, I've gotten used to it.  When I get to the point where I'm over my hair, I do some kind of protective style or straighten it.

10.)  Have you ever or will you ever cut or color your hair?

Yes, I have actually cut and highlighted my hair.  Back in 2011, I cut my hair into an inverted bob that I LOVED and highlighted it, but, it grew out quickly.  Also, back in 2015, what was supposed to be a trim turned into the stylist cutting too much and basically giving me a cut instead of a trim.  I'm always open to change.  So, yes, I'd definitely cut and/or color my hair in the future.
