The other day, I had a conversation with a little friend of mine. He shared with me a fear he was experiencing and how he couldn't stop thinking about the bad thoughts. So, I suggested that he stop thinking about the bad thoughts and think about happy thoughts and things that bring him joy. In the innocence and purity of his 5 year old heart, he recognized and shared with me that he knew the Lord was with him but he couldn't see him. I told him that though we can not see him, he's there and he lives in our hearts.
The conversation I had with him convicted me in such a way that I had to stop, check myself, and ask, "What am I thinking about?" Here I am telling him to not think about the bad thoughts yet to think on the things that bring him joy; but how many times do I think about the things that bring me fear and doubt? We, as adults, can be so engrossed with the stresses and downs of life that it can consume our thoughts in such a way that we forget that there are also things in our lives that are true, pure, just, lovely, that we can and should think on.
If at 5, my little friend knew that the Lord is with him, we should at 25, 35, 45, etc, know that the Lord is with us. So, get rid of your stinking thinking and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about those things.
So, what are you thinking about?
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. -Philippians 4:8
